There are largely three theoretical approaches toward lyric poetry. The first one is by whom and how the nature of lyric poetry is explained, and another is what should be considered important in the theories of lyric poetry. The third is the form of expression.
Meanwhile, a unity of the object of poem and poetic self has been viewed as one of the primary characteristics of lyric poetry, but it's now argued that the object of poem and poetic self could be separable from each other. However, the way of looking at the nature of lyric poetry remains unchanged. That is, lyric poetry has continued to be called the world of self. In the case of the form of expression, however, the object of poem and poetic self are separated from each other, while they had been unified in the past. Dieter Lamping suggests individual utterance through verses as the form of expression of lyric poetry.
What's noted in the theories of lyric poetry is the world of self. What one intends to write about and in what form it should be expressed are determined by his or her self. As the structure of lyric poetry depends on the role of self, what spirits one plans to embody and in what form they could be represented are chosen by self. As a consequence, how to look at the nature of self is important in the theories of lyric poetry.
