Since the early days of the Joseon dynasty, there were attempts made at replacing the existing practice of the newly-wed husband taking residence in his wife's family's place(the Namgwi Yeoga-jae/男歸女家制 practice), with a new practice called Chinyeong-jae. But the attempts did not succeed. In the 16th century, by the urge of several Neo-Confucian scholars a new marriage practice was adopted, in which the event of the newly-weds' officially 'meeting' with each other, that had usually been arranged upon the third day after the marriage ceremony, was arranged upon the very day of marriage.
The Ban-Chinyeong practice meant more elements of the Chinyeong-jae practice added to the newly-weds' meeting on the same day the marriage was arranged, like having the husband courting the bride and having her meet the bridegroom's parents, on the next day of the marriage. The Ban-Chinyeong practice was not a new practice of marriage, but was only a revised version of the existing one of which only part of the process was altered regardless of the residence policy. The Ban-Chinyeong practice was only implemented by a few Houses located inside the capital area. It failed to be widely accepted by the general population. But the Sa-Daebu scholar officials' efforts to enforce the Chinyeong-jae elements eventually contributed to the establishment of the practice of the newly-weds' meeting on the marriage day within the existing tradition of the Namgwi Yeoga-jae practice.
The Namgwi Yeoga-jae practice remained basically unchanged during the middle period of the Joseon dynasty, and the residence policy dictating the marriage ceremony to be held at the bride's house and the newly-wed's to reside there for a certain period of time was maintained as well. But the process continued to change in a gradual and partial fashion, and we can see that from the shift in meaning of the word ‘Secular rituals('Sok-ryae/俗禮'), which was changed from meaning the Namgwi Yeoga practice that directed the newly-weds' meeting to be held upon the third day after the marriage, to a new meaning, as referring to the same practice except slightly changed to direct the newly-weds to have meeting on the marriage day.
