One of the characteristic trends in recent American drama is its association in the increasing growth of scientific materials that serve important functions in depicting not only the advanced knowledge of science but the riddles of life. Such materials are too often described in metaphorical terms, foregrounding the nature of indeterminacy, undecidability, and uncertainty reflected in our daily life. Thus, this paper examines how mathematical proofs in David Auburn's Proof serve as a metaphor for the uncertainty of life, by focusing on the indeterminable process of proving the issues of authorship, of madness, of self, and of the relationship between characters.
Proof is generally considered to imply the absoluteness for an unchanging that is an absolute truth of reality. Yet this kind of proof is not suited for solving perplexing problems mainly related with a breakthrough mathematical proof of prime numbers in Proof: Who created this proof?; Did Robert retreat into schizophrenic dementia?; Will Catherine inherit her father's mental instability?; Do Catherine and Hall trust and love each other?; and Will Claire take her back to New York? The uncertainty of proving these problems suggests a framework for demonstrating how difficult it is to derive theorems of life. As our daily life which is filled with undecidable theorems that cannot be proved by the axioms, proof functions not as an absolute mathematical concept but a relative one that allows us to grasp the uncertainty of life.
Armed with their own beliefs, however, the characters attempt to search for the absolute truth behind a mysterious mathematical proof. Despite their attempts, they cannot reach the axiomatic conclusion on such perplexing problems; their beliefs, therefore, reveal themselves as repetitions of the abstract and undecidable theorem. With its subtle use of mathematics, this play retains qualities typical of undecidable phenomena of life with its frames that remain open-ended and inconclusive.
