This study aimes to present the cause of oppressions on women and some solutions for them. Because oppressions on women traditionally originate from economic discrepancies between the genders, women's obtaining jobs will be one way of freeing themselves from their suborination to men. To dissolute the traditional gender roles would be one way of solving the problems on women oppressions. However women must still preserve and cherish her maternal roles because motherhood can solve not only the women's own problems, but also the problems which stem from capitalism.
Capitalism has given men an economic power to oppress and dominate women. To solve the issues of oppression and dominance between the genders, feminists believe that women should have jobs which will provide them with independent financial means and self-reliance.
In Owners, since male characters are actually dependent on their wives in economic aspects, they do not dominate their wives. Clegg, one of the main characters, wants to live a patriarchal life. However it is impossible for him to realize the dreams because he is bankrupt and has no economic power. Instead, he has been subordinated to his wife. This suggests that economic power is prior to any patriarchal ideology that states men dominate women and women subordinate to men.
Clegg's wife Marion is a real estate agent who makes money and succeeds in society through competitions with many men. She also has a prominent ability and uses all possible tricks in business deals. Only to achieve her goals, she treats her customers with cruelty and values them only in terms of money.
Marion wants to possess and control everything by means of money, including her lover, Alec, his house and baby. She believes that money makes everything possible. she is free from husbands' oppressions because of her money and social position. However Marion uses undesirable methods that hurt and caused sufferings in others in obtaining her own profits and goals. Marion shows the possibility of women's independence by material success, but her extreme behaviors only reflect the negative and corrupted aspects of materialism, which does not lead to idealistic solutions of women oppressions.
Like Marion, Lisa has a job as a hairdresser and keeps her household for herself, instead of her husband, Alec. Alec neither has a job nor desires for any material possession. Unlike Marion, Lisa has three children and a warm heart to care and help other people as well as her family. Lisa has maternal love which helped her to overcome her problems regarding her baby who was adopted to Marion. This maternal love leads her to change herself as well as the other persons positive ways.
In this play, Churchill proves that women should have jobs to be independent and have motherhood to care and help the others in overcoming oppressions on women in idealistic ways. Having motherhood could be a real powerful methods that can overcome isolation and negative products of capitalism.
Through Lisa who is a woman and mother, Churchill insists that women must have both an economic power to be free from male oppression and motherhood to transcend and embrace many problems that exist in the capitalism society no matter how much devaluated it has been by male dominant traditional ideologies.
