Ruan Ji(阮籍) had a dream to rule the world rightly by studying hard confucianism that his family had studied for generations. However, he could not fulfill his dream in a changed time. The Wei Jin(魏晉) transition period was marked by a series of killings, from Jia Ping Zhi Bian(嘉平之變) which is said to have halved the number of prestigious scholar-officilas overnight to Si Ma Shi(司馬氏)'s coming to power. In this terrible situation, Ruan Ji felt a sense of futility and frustration, keeping away from the world and getting interested in Xuan Xue(玄學) of Taoism. His theory first centered on confucianism, then taoism, and finally the principle of taoism that leaves the nature as it is. This change happened in line with the current of the times.
As one of the respected scholar-officilas of his time, Ruan Ji was desired by both Chao Wei(曹魏) and Si Ma Shi. Thus, he became a public officer not of his own will. Yet, since this was not what he wanted, he repeatedly resigned. Even when in office, he did not do his duty, and appeared to be indifferent to the outside world. His ideal was not able to be compatible with the reality. Therefore, he was always in agony and conflict in his mind, drinking all day. He seemed drunk all the time, but actually wasn't most of the time. He seemed to be indifferent to the reality, but had a keen interest in developments in the political situation. He took great pains to have an appropriate relationship with the powers that be; he tried not to be too close to them for survival, but also not to be too distant.
Ruan Ji lived with jitters and agony, wandering between his ideal and the reality in his lifetime. While he could not accept the false reality, he did not aggressively confront and fight the reality. He wanted to escape from the world, but couldn't. This inability frustrated him. As a scholar-official, he was supposed to rule the world rightly. Yet, he was so desperate only to survive in a turbulent time. He anguished over his unfortunate lot. As he pursued an ideal world of Taoism, but was not able to completely abandon confucius ideas, he suffered internal contradiction and conflict. As a result, deviation from the norm accompanied a greater pain than freedom. Though he looked forward to rising above the world for good, he was stuck in the reality in the end. Ruan Ji, who was baffled, anxious, and in agony over his inability to realize his desire, was typical of We Jin Shi Ren(魏晉士人).
Fang Wai Zhi Ren(方外之人)'s attitude to transcend the reality within it was a means to protect himself. All that he could do was always be careful. Being careful was the best self-help. Meticulous care was a sad way of life for weak intellectuals who were not able to realize their aspirations in a tragic era.
