Even during the time period when the Ganghwa island was temporarily functioning as the capital city of the Goryeo dynasty, the main palace and the Suchang-gung palace in the Gaegyeong city were still in tact, and being maintained. The main palace certainly lost its function as a residence place, but it was still functioning as a place to hold memorial services and other ceremonial rituals.
During the reign of King Chungryeol-wang, several other secondary Igung/離 宮 palaces such as Sunyeong-gung, Sugang-gung and Ihyeon Shin-gung were constructed. Unlike the main palace, these secondary Igung palaces were mostly used to hold banquets. But then his son, King Chungseon-wang, chose to tear down most of the Igung palaces built during King Chungryeol-wang’s reign, or donate them to the Buddhist temples, when he was renovating the Yeongyeong-gung palace. The Yeongyeong-gung palace was used to host banquets, while the main palace still functioned as a place for ceremonial rituals.
In the meantime, secondary Igung palaces like Jesang-gung, Sunyeong-gung, Ihyeon Shin-gung and Samhyeon Shin-gung, which went through continuous constructions and dismantlement, were vividly mirroring changes in the status of the Kings’ authority, and the conflicts that involved them.
