Objective : This study was carried out to observe the change of body weight, glucose, and lipid metabolism during the atypical antipsychotics treatment.
Methods : Forty nine schizophrenic or schizoaffective patients were recruited and the patients with history of eating disorder were excluded. Body weight was checked with 4-week interval from baseline to the 48th week. Blood chemistry was checked twice at baseline and the 48th week for HbA1c, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride. The subjects were treated with risperidone(n=25) or olanzapine(n=24). The observations were done under natural course of the treatment without any limitation of dosage or combination of other drugs.
Results : After forty eight weeks of the treatment, subjects showed significant increase of body weight and BMI. They also had significant increase of HbA1c, cholesterol, LDL, and TG levels, but level of HDL decreased. The percent weight gain had negative correlation with initial BMI in both risperidone and olanzapine groups.
Conclusion : This results suggest that during the natural course of the atypical antipsychotics treatment, patients may have weight gain and abnormal lipid metabolism or glucose metabolism, and increased the risk of DM, or cardiovascular disease.
