It means the grade (class) of the expression in the term of respect. So to say, it is the equal division of the rule of honorific words but the term of the equal division of the system of the high and low. Nowadays, it is used as the various terms like the speech level or the audience service (reception) and the formality show.
Mr. Ju, See Kyung opinioned the equal division of honorific words was the 'Forward Division' in his 'Korean Grammar', that is to say, the difference of the elder, the younger, the high and low. Therefore, the fundamental factor of the forward division depended on Age. Even today it is being argued that the fundamental factor of the term of respect depends on age or on status. Thereupon, Mr. Ju gave priority to Age and trisected the equal division of honorific words such as the raise, namely, 'the term of respect'; the equivalent, namely, 'the term of equality'; and the low, namely, 'the term of slight (contempt)'.
Now, many scholars are suggesting the different opinions on 'the equal division of honorific words' respectively. Prof. Lee, Ju Hang says it is divided into two to six grades according to the researchers in 'Korean Grammar Study'. Prof. Lee, Jung Min divides it into Two Speech Level; Prof. Jo, June Hank, Prof. Choi, Myung Ok and Prof. Kim, Jong Tak into Three Speech Level; Prof. Sung, Ki Churl, Prof. Lee, Eek Sup, Prof. Go, Young Geun and Prof. Seo, Jung Sue into Four Speech Level; Prof. Choi, Hyun Bae, Prof. Kim, Suck Duek, Prof. Lee, Hei Seung, Prof. Hu, Wung, Prof. Chang, Suck Jin and Prof. Lee, Gil Rok into Five Speech Level; Prof. Kim, Min Sue, Prof. Martin, Prof. Yang, In Suck, Prof. Lee, Maeng Sung, Prof. Lee, Ik Sup and Prof. Park, Young Soon into Six Speech Level.
Especially, Prof. Seo, Jung Sue, in 'the Rule of Treatment', mentioned such professors as the follows: Kim, Suck Duek(1966), in the 1960's morphologically supported and developed the description of the rule of honorific words, which Choi, Hyun Bae(1937) had suggested. Also, Martin(1954) and Park, Chang Hae(1964) described the grade of the high and low in speech into the style of speech.
In addition, Prof. Song, Suck Jung(1967) treated as syntax based on the theory of transformation making grammar. He said that he concretely discussed how to realize the listeners treatment through indicating Speech Level just in front part of the regulation of old structure, when the theory of transformation making grammar had been changed into Aspect Model.
Although there are still the other opinions, they are introduced in the main subject and the outlook on them is suggested.
