In People usually think that smart materials and smart structures have not been developed until recent years. But those kinds of sensors have already been used for sensing damage in a variety of materials and structures. Two typical examples are piezoelectric materials (e.g., PZT) and electric strain gauges. Load cell is an example that utilizes the piezoelectric property to measure the change in physical quantities occurred by applied loads, while strain gauges are used to measure the deformation of compressive and tension members. The feasibility of using smart materials is realized for a monitoring technology when those sensors are used to monitor damages at inside or outsider of the structures.
But many researchers have attempted to acquire the changes in signals from electronic circuits or sensors without taking into consideration on the characteristics of the structure of interest. For the same reasons, there have been very limited applications for the smart sensor and there are needs to estimate the performance of each sensor type. In this study, A piezo-electric element will affect the resistance which is maintaining the voltage in wireless sensor, and PZT used to sending signal acceleration in wireless sensor. When voltage was high, it had some community of maximum load in result of experiment.
This study is a fundamental study on the development of a damage prediction system using a variety of sensors such as strain gauges, lead-resistance sensors, and glass tube switches.
