This research is about comparative study on international migration and the influence of national context in Britain and Germany. The immigration from New Commonwealth countries to Britain after the Second World War was formed by colonial legacy between Britain and past colonial countries without the influence of economic condition. In the meantime, economic development in Germany and foreign worker programme by the German government encouraged the immigration of foreign labour force from many countries. Britain succeeded in controlling and restriction of New Commonwealth citizens’ immigration, while Germany experienced the gap between results and aims of her policies in relation to restriction of foreign labourer immigration and settlement and return of foreign workers and immigrants to their home countries due to various national contexts. National context, including economic interests, history of immigration policy, and law and proceeding structure of policy, in both countries resulted in dissimilar results of restricted policies concerning international migration in the 1970s and the 1980s. As a result, this study for comprehensive understanding of international migration emphasized the analysis of national context that can shape and change migration flows unlike established international migration theories that mainly depended on a one sided view.
