During the 1990s, the Russian party system had become more structuralized in the shape of a multiparty type experiencing three general elections (December 1993, December 1995, and December 1999). Although still short of deep, stable roots in society and lacking in political influence under the strong presidency, major political parties were consolidated in the competitive configuration of a multiparty system: liberal rightist parties (Russia’s Choice and later SPS, Yabloko), right nationalist party (LDPR and later Zhirinovsky Bloc), leftist party (KPRF), and the centrist parties (NDR and later Unity, OVR). In the course of the development of the party system, earlier disloyal oppositions of both leftist and nationalist parties were moderated. All the major parties embraced the patriotist-nationalist ideas. Growth of the centrist parties diluted the ideological polarization of the party system.
However, the emergence of a predominant party of power, United Russia, in the December 2003 Duma election brought about a fundamental change in the shape of Russian party politics. Its capturing of the absolute majority in the Duma may signal the transformation of the Russian multiparty system into a predominant type. It remains to be seen whether or not United Russia will maintain its preponderant position by dealing with successfully its own problems: heavy reliance on President Putin, unstable base in society, heterogeneous composition of the party, possible conflicts between the state and the oligarchy.
