The purpose of this essay is to introduce the structure and contents of the Korean Poetry Corpus(KoPoCo) compiled in the process of the Korean Poetry Database(KPD) Project, to draw some statistical phenomena from it, and finally to clarify the stylistic fingerprints of modern Korean poets. KPD contains the original poems of the poetic anthologies published between 1923 and 1950. Also the metadata database of modern poetry and poetic anthologies and the concordance of Korean modern poetry are included in the form of table. The corpus is the only reliable and comprehensive corpus of Korean modern poetry, and the number of poetic works is over 8,000 of 196 anthologies of 345 poets.
To experiment the statistical phenomena at first all of the poetic words printed as inflectional forms are lemmatized and normalized manually into basic forms, discerned their parts of speech and finally attached with some useful tags such as the date of publication, the source information and the name of genre. Through the statistical investigation, the noun words come up to 41%, the verb words up to 25% and adjective words up to 10% of the population. Such a fact is so strange to the non-literary texts.
It is cleared that the average words of a modern poem are 75 words and the most dominant genre of modern poetry is a free style poem. Among the words, ‘na(Ⅰ)’ is used with the highest frequency since most of the modern poems belong to lyric poetry which deals with personal feelings, experiences and thoughts essentially. The most frequently used noun is ‘bam(night)’, reflecting the atmosphere of that period.
The poetic idiolect is a variety of a language unique to a poet. It is manifested by patterns of word selection and grammar, or words, phrases, idioms, or pronunciations that are unique to that individual. To clarify these idiolect words, the corpus is classified and tagged by the name of a poet, and finally the relative degree of intimacy of the poets who share the words is investigated. Thanks to the results, the resemblance between Kim Sowol and his tutor Kim Eok can be explained objectively.
The visualization and numerical expression of these phenomena in Korean modern poetry are the final task. Just as every individual’s fingerprint is different and personal DNA has its own combining structure, the languages of poets have distinctive characteristics. The problem is that there is no comprehensive word net of Korean poetry. So I suggest an spiral graph named as ‘a vortex of poetic words’ to allocate the words of the corpus and to compare the distribution of the poets’ poetic words.
