This study proposes a way of representing the Smart Environment. The Smart Environment has been investigated through many research efforts, but most of these research focused on representing its technical parts such as Home Automation and Home Network. Our viewpoint is more from architects and users of the environment, not from physical devices.
Because Smart Environment is in experimental phases and still conceptual, it requires a lot of cost to physically build it. It is more efficient to make a virtual environment at the testing stage instead of physical building. A markup language is useful method for representing Smart Environment in that regards. In this research we propose a basic schema of Smart Environment Markup Language which integrates the architectural and user-centered views. Also, we propose a working prototype system which uses the markup language to generate virtual Smart Environment. The system has been tested using the cases of simple apartment housing building or a private residence.
