The purpose of this study is to analyze the regional, typical, and functional distribution and currency of Korean traditional urban forest(Oeupsu: 邑藪), and then to purpose some ideas on the preservation and application of Oeupsu. In this study, we selected 220 Oeupsus after we reviewed almost all kinds of records, maps, and surveys. And then we analyze these Oeupsus according to ten items. These items are origin, region, direction, exist, type, function, mixed function, new function, the composition of plant, and dominant plant.
The analysis of the data consists of two phases. The first involves frequency to find out the currency from the data. The second phase is crosstabs to test the correlation among ten items. Results of this study can be summarized as follows;
1. Almost all Oeupsus in Korea disappeared during the rule of Japanese Imperialism. That is because Japanese wants to use wood resources for the Pacific War.
2. The directions of Oeupsus from the city center seem to be south, east, and south-east. And these Oeupsus are now mostly destructed. Therefore, if these Oeupsus were restored, the green network of urban area would be improved.
3. Because the greatest number of Oeupsus exist at the Kyungbuk region in Korea, we need to make the regional restoration master plan for Oeupsus in Kyungbuk.
4. Because of the development of the river in order to prevent a city from floods, many Oeupsus on the riverside were destructed. Therefore, the law which contributed to the destruction of existing trees along the river must be seriously reconsidered.
5. The trend shows that the functions of Oeupsus are changing from religion, reservation, military to recreation, landscape, education.
At last, results from this study can hopefully be a guide for the construction of the secondary Oeupsu.
