The practical function of a traditional urban forest means it's role related to the traditional city, and it has been doing since the forest planted. I think that the traditional urban forest has been able to remain until today because of it's practical function. So the traditional urban forest composed of big trees more than 100 years usually differs from the other forest around the traditional city. Results of this study can be summarized as follows;
1. The forest constructed in order to appreciate scenery is usually located at a high place, near a famous pavilion, lake, river, and mountain. As a place including historical associations, this forest symbolizes the dignity of the traditional city.
2. One practical function of the traditional urban forest is prevention against disasters(For example;flood prevention, protection against wind, tide water control, and prevention against fire). The forest on a river bank make it stable because roots of trees establish the stone and soil on the bank and control the speed of running fluid for the heavy flood. The forest planted boundaries of the traditional city or a gorge which wind blows in protects against winds which make a fire spread in all directions because of thatched roofs. The forest along with a seaside has played the role of protection against wind and tide water in order to preserve coastal farming land.
3. The forest planted on the bank on a reservoir and an irrigational canal has played the role of supporting water supply into a paddy field, because the technique of irrigation system changed from the type of a reservoir to a dammed pool around the 1600's. So the forest planted on the bank of an irrigational canal has been usually made after the 1600's.
The traditional urban forest would be an important forest which is planted in the early stage of the formation of the traditional city and which is in charge of a special function and role. As if the amount of urban park and green space per a person in a city means the degree of comfortableness, the traditional urban forest might be the identity of the traditional city as a center of city culture and pride.
