During the Chosun Dynasty, the Taegubu was geomantically and topographically influenced by feng-shui(geomancy). Centering around the Taegubu Castle, the altar to the guardian deities was arranged in western Pyongri-dong, the altar to the tutelary deities in the southern back mountain, and the altar to the demons in northern Chimsan, in terms of arrangement of spaces for sacrificial rites. It seems, therefore, that for local cities, spaces for sacrificial rites, i.e. altars to the guardian deities and demons, had strong directional tendencies, centering around the castle city. The location of the altars means that the royal ancestors’ shrines and the guardian deities of the State had been considered important by the capital city. It also seems that this consideration was made for a king to control religion as well as policies of central and local governments in the course of holding regal sway in the early Chosun Dynasty in that the altar to the tutelary deities. which served as a place for popular belief. became the State’s spaces for sacrificial rites led by the governmental authorities. Eventually it can be seen that the sacrificial rites were important elements in forming the spacial structure of the capital city and local cities and that the local cities developed into a miniature of the capital city.
As stated above, during the Chosun Dynasty the local governments followed the administrative systems of the central government. Thus, the structure of the local castle cities ranging from the entire spacial structure of the city to building structure was formed in accordance with hierarchical order. The structure was symbolically and uniformly developed, and the city was also formed as a miniature of the Hansungbu.
