The objectives of this paper are 1) to review the evolution of urban transportation studies in both Europe and U.S. in the past three decades ; 2) to examine the adoptational process of Western methodologies to the fields of transportation studies in Korea ; 3) to search for research topics which are necessary for the development of transportation studies in Korea.
Transportation studies has gone through three stages of methodological development : 1950s ; 1960s ; 1970s. The traffic engineering practiced in 1950s has provided an impetus for the development. of transportation studies. Traffic engineering became integrated into the framework of urban transportation planning in 1960s.
Transportation studies in Korea has been rapidly growing since the early 1970s. Much progress has been made on urban transportation fields. Due to a short academic history, however, many problems and issues have been generated in terms of appropriatedness of western methods to Korean cities and relevant research topics.
Having reviewed the evolution of transportation studies and issues surrounding the transportation research in Korea, relevant research topics can be drawn. Major research topics to be explored are as follows.
1) research on transportation demand and related methodological issues.
2) study on modes and a variety of policy issues surrounding the operations of transportation modes.
3) relationship between land use and transportation systems.
4) exploration on the transportation planning process.
