The pattern of urbanization that emerged in Korea has a high concentration of population in Seoul and regional imbalance in the distribution of urban population and economic activity. The reduction of population concentration in Seoul is presently one of the most important and controversial policies being pursued by the government.
This paper explains the theoretical approaches to classifying cities in an urban system for analyzing urban economic activities and growth dynamics. The theoretical approaches examined qualitative, economic base, and factor analysis approaches to urban functional classification.
In this paper we will use Nelson's urban classification method for analyzing the 93 urban centers in 1960, 101 urban centers in 1970, and 147 urban centers in 1980 wi thin Korea.
This research will explore the implications for a well-defined urbanization strategy through which policy makers in Korea may direct the dispersal of population and economic activities in a decentralization pattern of urbanization in order to promote changes in urban and regional growth patterns in the future.
