In order to clarify the urban linkage system of the Korea cities, which is composed of forty seven cities, a three-shaped digraph abstracting the areal linkage system is first prepared on the basis of origin-destination data for telephone message flow. The purpose of this paper is to describe a procedure for ordering and grouping cities by the magnitude and direction of the flows of communications between them.
1) The association between cities is not the only system which may be defined as a network of points and lines. Cities may be thought of as points with information flows as lines. The important step in the employment of abstract linear graph analysis is the assignment of plausible meaning to the points and lines. In order to solve the assignment, all points and lines must be weighted to the results of matrix B which represents the total direct and indirect influence between cities.
2) Korea cities is composed of only one urban linkage system. But if we count the subsystems, Korea is composed of eight urban linkage systems. The terminal node of these systems is metropolitan Seoul. With regards their influence spheres, each of them occupies a relatively small cities in comparison, and Seoul system is contained within the national territory. In regard to the seven sub-systems, Cheju, Kwangju, Jinju and Masan has the simplest sub-system and conversely, Seoul and Busan has the most complex. The Seoul system, in which all cities are linked to Seoul with low connectivity, but the satellite cities of Seoul is not.
3) When the urban linkage systems are deduced on the basis of intercity connectivity. 47 cities are grouped into eight first order regions in Korea. This region, of course, are the subsystems of the lower level. These regions are grouped into two second order regions and finally into one fourth order region. The degree of grouping is higher in comparison with the cities of developed countries. This is probably reflected by the higher socio-economic dependency of Seoul in Korea. Such a functional independency is of a weaker degree in cities far from Seoul. This phenomena suggests that information flows the principle of distance decay have influence upon information flows. In this reason, the writer assert that we must establish the planning of upbringing policy to regional centers in local area.
