In this study, I have attempted to solve two subjects by introducing Taejon-shi as a case study like the following ; First, if the migration field exists in a city concerning the structure of the migration or not. If it does what does the pattern of it look like? Secondly, can we grasp socio-economic characteristics of the intra-urban migration on the ground of the Berry’s Geographical Field Theory? And if it is possible, what kind of characteristics do they represent? To solve the first problem, the destination and origin factors of intra-urban migration and their spatial patterns were investigated and to solve the second problem the factors of the urban socio-economic characteristics and their spatial patterns were investigated too. As a theoretical background analyzing these things, I used an urban residential structural approach with emphasis on inter-relationships between the homogeneous region and the nodal regi on. The main methods to analyze such problems are R-mode factor analysis, Q-mode factor analysis, and canonical correlation analysis. The data used here assume the form of the transaction matrix of migration and socio-economic geographical matrix. In case of investigating the structure of the migration, the findings can be summarized as follows : First, the seven destination migration factors were extracted, and their spatial patterns shows that most destinations are omnipresent adjacent to the fixed part(expecially, eastern district). Secondly. the six origin migration factors were extracted and their spatial patterns show characteristics similar to the destination migration factors. Thirdly, the six intra-urban migration fields were confirmed ; Yucheon Munji-dong Field. In case of investigating the socio-economic characteristics of the migration, the findings-can be summarized as follows ; First, on the whole, the intra-urban socio-economic characteristics are manifested in five common factors. The factors are suburbs and newly-developed district characteristics, manufacture district characteristics, residential district characteristics. central business district characteristics(C.B.D. characteristics), and sub-C.B.D. characteristics. The spatial pattern of these factors manifest socio-economic characteristics of respective district exactly. Secondly, the socio-economic characteristics of destination migration factors are such that the first factor and the manufacture district characteristics, the second factor and the residential and central business district characteristics, the third factor and the residential district characteristics, the fifth factor and the suburbs and newly-developed district characteristics, and the sixth and seventh factors and the sub-C.B.D. characteristics, have strong inter-dependency, respectively. The fourth factor and the characteristics of suburbs, newly developed and central business district have weak relationship of interdependency. Thirdly, the socio-economic characteristics of origin migration factors are such that the first factor and the manufacture district characteristics, the third factor and the manufacture and central business district characteristics, the fourth factor and the sub-C.B.D. characteristics, and the fifth and the sixth factors and the characteristics of suburbs, newly developed and central business district characteristics, have strong interdependency, respectively. With the above analysis, I confirmed that characteristic migration fields exist in the intra-city of Taejon, and also destination and origin migration factors have distinct socio-economic characteristics. In the course of the analysis, it was also confirmed that the factor analysis and the canonical correlation analysis are effective, and that the Beny’s Geographical Field Theoretic Approch is also effective especially to investigate the socio-economic characteristics of migration. The study such as this should be developed into the prediction about the structure and socio-economic characteristics of migration. Also, it should be applied to larger scale of district.
