High technology industry is conceived by planners as a Holy Grail for declining industries in developed countries. In the U.S. alone, there are about 50 of what it called "technopolis". Korea has recently launched a hi-tech promotion program to catch up economically advanced countries.
The review of the high tech-based towns of Silicon Valley and Rt. 128 region reveals that planners failed to consider the serious impacts of industry on housing shortage, land-use pattern, traffic congestion, and environmental damages in the towns. The study concludes that hi-tech industry policy should include measures to cope with such urban problems.
