The main purpose of this study is to guide Korea toward a future that fulfills the dreams and aspirations of Koreans in the era of rapid transformation. With this in mind, we suggest policy themes and indicators of the quality of life.
The three policy themes to which policy priority should be given to improve the quality of life are derived from historical review of Korea's social trends and previous researches. They are 1) guarantee standard livings to all residents, 2) promotion of local competitive power, and 3) harmony between development and environment.
This study classifies indicators of quality of life into six categories. They are natural environment, economy, culture/education, welfare, infrastructure, and settlement environment. We suggest some indicators of each category based on the concept of sustainable development. Finally, we discuss roles of both the public sector(central and local government) and the private sector(firms, NGOs, CBOs, and individuals) for the future.
