This study aimed to find an efficient image classification method for the analysis of urban forest by comparing the results of satellite image analysis with field survey data. For the analysis, ER Mapper, Arc/Info & ArcView GIS, and Landsat TM images of Seoul were used.
Classification accuracy of three methods-multiband of single image, band ratio of single image, and multiband of multiple images-was compared. The results showed that multiband method of single image is better than the other methods in accuracy and correction of shadow effect. The use of multiple images increased accuracy in some cases, but its effect was not stable.
The multi band method was applied to vegetation classification of Dae-mo mountain and the result was compared with field survey data. In the process, two training region selection methods were compared: selection of training region based on the field survey data and on the vegetation map of Korea Forestry Research Institute. The accuracy of using field survey data yielded better accuracy. Finally, the change of vegetation structure in the Dae-mo mountain was analyzed.
The results of this study verified an appropriate classification method for the analysis of urban forest, and demonstrated the direction of application method. The limitations of this study and future research directions were discussed.
