The company town as a type of new town has been recently emerged to address the deficiency problem in economic self-sufficiency of existing new town development and to promote the private sector’s participation in urban development process. This study is focused on economic self-sufficiency and publicity of company town development in which the private company would take the initiative and so private interest driven project could be proceeded. Therefore the company town should meet the requirements as a economically self-sufficient and publically acceptable city, in aspect of self-sufficiency. So, this study set the company town concept and its types proper to Korean situation, and then drew out the basic indicators and criterion relating to economic self-sufficiency through methods of precedent research review, case study and expert survey. The results of this research can be summarized as follows: First, the Korean company town can be classified into 3-type ; Facility-Dependent Industry Type, Knowledge-Based Industry Type, and Tourist Industry Type. Second, the basic 2 indicators representing the economic self-sufficiency in company town are employment rate and industrial area rate, Third, the direct employment rate of 3 types mentioned above is 15-20%, 15-20%, 5-10% and industrial area rate 30-35%, 5-10%, 65-70% respectively. Fourth, the minimum population of the employed in three types of above is repeatedly 10,000prs, 3,000prs, 3,000prs and also the minimum area 1.0㎢, 0.165㎢, 6.6㎢.
