The future is generally a deep concern of the planning profession. There usee to be an essential symbiosis between planning and forecasting. In recent decades, planners have shown a tendency to neglect the future, involving themselves a great deal in present-focused decisions about space. The primary purpose of this essay-like paper is to examine the intrinsic relationship between planning activities and forecasting. To begin with, the characteristics and patterns of the future are discussed, along with the very nature of future-oriented planning. Also various forecasting methods are explained such as extrapolation, analogy, causation, and apriorism. From a perspective of instrumentally rational approach, the use of prediction is highlighted to explore alternative futures. But scientific knowledge alone is not enough to shape the future that would guide planning. New planning paradigms tend to put the emphasis on communicative aspects of planning in the information society. Planners should become visionaries, rather than value-neutral technicians. There is a growing need for more imaginative thinking about the future in planning practice and education.
