The essay is to review the meaning of the family, focusing on 「The origin of family」 and 「Movement」 of Jo Kyung Lan. She breaks up the traditional view of family as a group of harmony and peace and a community of affection. She changes the concept in which family can hold together when something bad happens to them or while they are suffering from a financial crisis. Instead, they want to make a space only for themselves, getting out of the place where family unite disappears. While each family member is breaking the family unite and making his or her own space, there is a person who is trying to constitute new family structure on that crack place, taking the break as it is.
In 「Movement」, “I” goes to the home his mother’s side with a desire for family and lives there with the thought that “I’m still alone like a person who isn’t birthed from anyone’s womb”. However, “I” makes up new family structure with the movement of the life who will be newly born, trying to fill up the absence of his grandfather and aunt escaped from their family. In 「The origin of family」, “I” escapes from his family which is beginning to take apart due to his father’s failure and leaving home, and makes the place for his own. Finally, although he leaves his family and also breaks up his girlfriend who has some possibility to constitute family with him, “I” sets out for his new place.
The characters have a similar reason why they want to make up their own places and also not to be fettered by the fence of family ties. Sometimes Family preforms a role to make its members unite. It is, however, no more than a blocked and chocking space. Then each character solves the problem according to his or her way and tries to make up new world. Jo Kyung Lan presents the contorted image of family in an everyday experience to us. Nevertheless, we can think that ultimate purpose of the work which she wants to show to readers is for family members to get released from the restraint of breaking family and try to create the new and positive thing, showing their active and initiative ability.
