Generally, the Sarangchae, the man's part of house in Joseon dynasty, was called as Dang(堂). And also the records about Dang, related to the house, are repeatedly found in the literature of Goryeo dynasty. In this study, I took notice to those aspects, then interpreted the meaning of Dang in the architectural culture, and analysed the meaning and the form of that, spacially in the house of Goryeo dynasty.
In Goryeo dynasty, the Dang in the house, was multiple functioned space, used as man's daily living space, reception space, study, and the space for moral culture like the Zen-Buddhist meditation. Generally the Dang was composed in the separated territory, and had the court yard in front. And the type of court yard was related to the function of Dang. If the Dang was used for the public banquet or official duties, the court yard was empty. And if the Dang was used for daily party or Zen-Buddhist meditation, the court yard was made to garden which have pond, oddly shaped stone and plant. Sometimes, Dang was used as the space for family party like the birthday celebration for parents. But the subject of most parties, Zen-Buddhist meditation, and study was man. Because of that, Dang became to the space for man, which have separated territory in house. As the result, it can be said that, the house form, which have man and woman's daily living area was separated style, was not originated and completed in Joseon dynasty, the original form was made in Goryeo dynasty already.
