The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of positive self-concepts and pro-social behaviors as a result of kindergarten physical education program for urban and rural kindergarten children. The thirty male and thirty female for 6-year old children participated in this study. All subjects received the same physical activity program for twenty-four weeks. The instruments were used in both the Positive Self-Concepts Inventory(Gently & Yeasts, 1974) and the Pro-Social Behaviors Scale (Walsh, 1980; Bar-Tel, 1976).
Both groups significantly improved their positive self-concepts and pro-social behaviors based on the physical activity program(P<.05). However, in terns of the total self-concepts, the mean of the urban children were significantly higher than the rural children(P<.05), In addition, the mean of the urban children were also significantly higher than the rural children based on the general satisfactory self-concepts, the peer-group self-concepts, and the physical self-concepts. On the other hand, there were no difference between the urban and rural children related to the academic self-concepts and teacher-children self-concepts(P>.05).
In conclusion, physical activity programs for preschool children would be helpful to improve their positive self-concepts. Thus, a regular physical education program in both urban and rural children is necessary for improving positive way of thinking in any level of preschool.
