The aim of this study was to examine whether long-term aerobic exercise and/or vitamin E administration of male university students can influence antioxidant enzymes(SOD, CAT, GPX), glutathione and malondialdehyde(MDA) in blood.
Twenty-eight males were divided into four groups. The supplement group received 1000 IUs of vitamin E once a day for a period of 12 wk. The control group, exercise group and vitamin E+exercise group received placebo pills once a day for the same period of time. Exercise consisted of 00 min of treadmill running at 65% of maximal O₂ consumption (VO₂max) for a period of 12 wk.
Serum SOD activity increased significantly in the vitamin E-supplemented group, exercise group and vitamin E+exercise group compared to the control group. Also, CAT and GPX activity increased significantly in the exercise group and vitamin E+exercise group compared to the control group.
Vitamin E supplementation to exercising humans completely abolished the free radical production. The protection of Vitamin E against oxidative stress appears to be mediated through the improvement of antioxidant mechanisms by enzymes like SOD, CAT and GPX.
And glutathione concentration increased significantly in the vitamin E+exercise group compared to the control group.
Moreover, significantly reduced malondialdehyde serum levels were measured in the exercise and vitamine E group. The findings indicate a protective effect of vitamin E supplementation and long-term aerobic exercise against oxidative stress induced by free radical.
As a results, exercise training and vitamin E administration seems to reduce the cell damage induced oxidative stress and to enhance defense system in untrained subjects.
