The purpose of this study was to analyze the realities of school sports facilities in Seoul and 5 megalopolises(Busan, Daegu, Kwangju, Daejon) and 9 provinces(Kyonggi Province, Kangwon Province, South and North Chugncheon Provinces, South and North Cholla Provinces, South and North Kyoungsang Provinces, Cheju Province} and consider the improvements of school sports facilities on this basis. For this purpose, this study attempted to analyze the present situation and problem of school sports facilities in 6 megalopolises and 9 provinces largely on the basis of the 2001 School Sports Statistics published by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources. As a result, the following conclusion was drawn:
First, it is necessary to reorganize the ordinance of criteria for school sports facilities.
Second, it is necessary to secure and modernize financial resources for the expansion of school sports facilities.
Third, it is necessary to achieve the efficiency of school sports facilities.
In conclusion, the qualitative conditions of the facility to be used for sports activity should be maximized to enhance the level of sports participation. That is, it is necessary to design the sports facilities in diverse sizes and types, allow students to make practical use of the characteristics of school students in each class and enhance the level of convenience and stability in using sports facilities. Like this, it is necessary to establish the plan to secure sufficient financial resources to attempt to modernize school sports facilities through their qualitative and quantitative expansion. For example, it is thought that it is necessary to establish the plan to either appropriate the special budget for the expansion of sports facilities or make obligatory the financial grant rate of local education invested in school sports facilities to more than a given level.
