This thesis sets up a purpose to examine ‘metropolitan fears’ which the writers in 1960’s perceive through the specific space of ‘rooms’. This thesis looks around dialectical relationship between space and subject analysing “A Strong Man” by Kim Seung Ok and “A Room in Seoul” by Park Tae-Soon and together, describes how subjects signify the space.
In “A Strong Man” Kim Seung-Ok strongly disapproves of the way of life of a newly-risen middle class in Seoul. Their life has its roots in 'the privatization of life’. In home a newly-risen middle class tries to maintain a homogenized system shutting inner rooms off from outer world. The situation in 1960’s that accomplishes ‘condensed growth’ by oppressing the heterogeneity is revealed metaphorically in “A Strong Man”. In this literary work the author expresses his psychological disapproval the way of life of a newly-risen middle class in Seoul that is constructed without the consideration of others.
In “A Room in Seoul” Park Tae-Soon describes the desire for ‘the calm private-life’ with the comparison between Western-style houses and traditional Korean-style houses. The metropolitan fear which Park testifies is powerful. So he tries to overcome the fear through psychological defense mechanism, and his testimony is also about ‘the abnormality’ derived from the Korean modern manifestation process.
1960’s is a situation where metropolitan space grows rapidly and internally takes place space-division. Park and Kim give shape essentially to Seoul in 1960’s through ‘rooms’ that are the minimum unit of metropolitan space, and also they take a disrupted attitude toward metropolitan spaces and rooms. The disrupted attitude shows the disagreement with ‘the liberalist ideology’ of the intellectuals in 1960’s and their world. The two writers testimonies that a right of human beings is being deprived ceaselessly, though our metropolis is superficially being organized by its consistent order.
