This study was focused on the effect of eleven pre-emergence herbicides on above- and below-ground growth of zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica) during vegetative propagation in a greenhouse. The herbicides were applied at 50, 75, 100, and 200% of their respective recommended rates and the spray volume was 26 mLㆍm?². Oxadiazon (EC) and isoxaben (SC) at their respective recommended rates (100%) did not adversely affect the above-ground growth during vegetative propagation. However, flazasulfuron (WP), imazaquin (SL), and napropamid (WP) adversely affected the above-ground growth during vegetative propagation. In the case of below-ground growth, oxadiazon (EC), isoxaben (SC), and oryzalin (SC) at their respective recommended rates did not adversely affect, but flazasulfuron (WP) and napropamid (WP) adversely affected during vegetative propagation. Compared to control at 147 days after application, the relative ground coverages of zoysiagrass affected by initial herbicide treatments with simazine (WP), prodiamine (WG), dithiopyr (EC), isoxaben (SC), and pendimethalin (EC) were good at 50% of their respective recommended rates. The relative ground coverages with oxadiazon (EC), isoxaben (SC), simazine (WP), dithiopyr (EC), pendimethalin (SC), and pendimethalin (EC) at their respective recommended rates were 165.7, 160.0, 120.0, 114.3, 111.4, and 108.6%, respectively. Oxadiazon (EC), isoxaben (SC), and pendimethalin (SC) were shown to be safe pre-emergence herbicides to above- and below-ground growth of zoysiagrass.
