Export for grafting cactuses by ship transportation generally takes more than 30 day from Korea to Europe and its cost is lower than any other transport system. However, long transport period could deteriorate commercial quality of products. Thus, this research was initiated to preserve commercial quality of Chamaecereus silvestrii f. variegata using 1-methylcyclopropene (MCP) and silver thiosulfate (STS) in a growth chamber. Respiration rate of C. silvestrii f. variegata was reduced remarkedly with 500 nLㆍL?¹ MCP treatment at 35 days after storage. Ethylene decreased with less than 300 nLㆍL?¹ MCP compared to control, moreover, 400 and 500 nLㆍL?¹ MCP treatments did not produce ethylene at all. STS at 0.1 mM showed the highest ethylene production than the other STS treatments and control at 35 days after storage. Firmness of rootstocks treated with MCP in C. silvestrii f. variegata was reduced in a concentration-dependent manner. And the firmness of scions treated with MCP was reduced faster than those of rootstocks after 15 days of storage. Firmness of rootstocks and scions treated with STS decreased slowly in a concentration-dependent manner after 25 days of storage. C. silvestrii f. variegata treated with MCP (400 and 500 nLㆍL?¹) and STS (1.5 and 2.0 mM) showed 100% survival rate when regeneration was examined at 2 month after planting. STS treatment and control showed the phenomenon of thin calyx end. With 400 and 500 nLㆍL?¹ MCP, however, overgrowth phenomenon was decreased by 38 and 52%, respectively, compared to that of control. Thus, 400 and 500 nLㆍL?¹ MCP treatments were optimal for maintaining commercial value of C. silvestrii f. variegata by ship transportation.
