This paper aims to examine the significance of place in the age of environmental crisis, noting one of the paradoxical situations it has witnessed, a situation in which place-based issues and agendas upsurge in the fields of culture and politics while places become apparently homogeneous, less unique, and thus less important under the pressure of rapid globalization. Martin Heidegger's meditation on the meaning of dwelling on the earth in his discussion about the impacts of modern technology provides a fruitful background for elucidating such a paradox. Heidegger's philosophy, which criticizes the modern philosophical tradition of the West based on the Cartesian subject for isolating Being from the world, suggests that recent interest in places represent man's ineradicable nostalgia for a way of life deep-rooted in, and coㅡmitted to, place. In this context the paper goes on to discuss various dimensions of the idea of place such as the difference between space and place and the different levels of experiencing place, and consider the symbolic implications of the idea of hometown against the penetration of the globalized systems of technological culture into social life. The paper finally discusses the return of place in relation to bioregionalism, which comes along as an alternative way of life in a challenge to the increasingly centralized system of global capitalism, one based on an authentic sense of localized community and of an authentic relation to nature.
