Doctors of Oriental medicine(韓醫師, Hanuisa) are major specialists in Korean traditional medicine. They have been approved of its legal status and established its transmission basis by enacting national medicine law, stipulated of ‘Hanuisa’ status in 1952. In transitional period(1952~1964) that official education system were not established, they have been trained through a moment ‘official approval test’ for Hanuisa license Examination.
In this context, the aim of this article is to investigate the aspects of the entrance in Oriental medicine and the transmission of its skill and knowledge. And ultimately, I wanted to understand the aspects of change and continuance in Korean traditional medicine. For this, I applied to a method of the oral life histories through deep interview of nine elder doctors of Oriental medicine. In concrete terms, I recorded in MD(mini disc) oral materials and collected various concerning documents(official, private)·photographs·life things.
The phases of the entrance in Oriental medicine of the elder doctors of Oriental medicine are two, namely ‘succession and pioneer entrance’. The former is to succeed to one’s father in the family occupation that is not only a symbol of identity but also the economic foundation of one’s family. The latter is to enter in Oriental medicine by various inducements, falling in its excellent effects in domestic medication and persuaded by social network, self-selection by accident or inevitably.
The elder doctors of Oriental medicine have learned and handed down its skill and knowledge through following various channels, a long learning based on patron-client relationship, self-education in traditional medicine books, making famous specialists in Oriental medicine their teachers, study at informal academies and formal colleges etcs.. The patterns of transmission of skill and knowledge of Oriental medicine are classified into following four according to yes or no of succeeding to one’s family occupation and a study at Oriental medicine college ; pattern Ⅰ(succeeding〓study), pattern Ⅱ(succeeding〓no-study), pattern Ⅲ(no-succeeding〓study), pattern Ⅳ(no-succeeding〓no-study).
Though the means of these traditional transmission were not operated systematically, it took an important role as cultural mechanism for training and transmission of Oriental medicine in transitional period(1952~1964) that official education system were not established. It is required to accept its merits that the elder doctors of Oriental medicine have developed valuable secret recipes(秘方) and clinic experiences for all life, being important knowledge heritages.
