The purpose of this study is to analyze sports event participants' demographic variables, patterns of uses and motives as well as subsidiary tourism effects of the event. As a case, Kyongju Cherry Blossom Marathon Contest was selected; the sports event is held every year in Kyongju Bomun Complex to promote tourism. For this case study, a questionnaire was sent to the participants in the Marathon event, and 280 people answered it. Their motives of participation were measured using a scale consisting of 16 items; the scale was developed from a preceding study and modified by the researcher through a preliminary survey.
As a result of analyzing participants' demographic variables, it was found that the majority of the participants were those in their 30's or 40's with higher income level and academic background, and that most of them were accompanied by co-workers/neighbors and family members/relatives. On the other hand, as a result of analyzing their motives of participation, it was found that the major motives were escape from ordinary life, concern about health, family solidarity/sociable life, physical fitness and adventurism. However, participants' motives did not differ significantly depending on their demographic variables.
Meanwhile, it was confirmed through this study that the image of the hosting city for the participants was enhanced much after the event. To the contrary, it was found that participants were less informed of other tourism sites in the region, which suggests that some reform measures should be taken to encourage the participants to tour about the city after the event.
