The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of walking exercise and red ginseng supplementation on WBC and WBC subsets of female elders. For this purpose, 36 female elders (age: 78.86±4.75 yrs) were randomly assigned to six different groups of six subjects per each; a group of aerobic exercise and red ginseng supplementation, a group of red ginseng supplementation alone, a group of walking exercise alone, a group of aerobic exercise with placebo supplementation, a group of placebo supplementation alone, and a group of control. Experiment was performed for 16 weeks. Walking exercise had been performed three times a week up to 14th week, four times a week from 15th to 16th week. In each walking exercise, duration was 60~70 min and exercise intensity was 40~60% HRmax corresponding to the energy consumption of 120~180 kcal. Red ginseng powder capsules (300㎎ per each), made from ginseng roots cultivated for six years, were manufactured by Korean Ginseng Co. Placebo capsules manufactured by Taerim Pharmaceutical Co. were very similar to the size, weight, shape, taste and color of red ginseng powder capsules. These capsules were supplied to subjects with the following recipe; three capsules per each time and three times a day right after meals.
Blood-sampling was performed before and after the sixteen-week program. About 40㏄ blood was collected from a vein in the upper arms of subjects. Blood samples were stored at the temperature of 70℃ in a refrigerator after centrifugation, and blood analyses were requested to Green Cross Co.
Paired t-test and one-way repeated measured ANOVA were used as the statistical analysis method, and significance was a㏄epted at p<.05. From the statistical analysis results for WBC and WBC subsets before and after the sixteen-week program, the following conclusions could be obtained.
1. After the sixteen-week program, WBC was significantly increased in the groups of aerobic exercise with red ginseng supplementation and red ginseng supplementation alone while it was significantly decreased in the groups of placebo supplementation alone and control. The neutrophil was significantly increased in the group of aeorbic exercise with red ginseng supplementation but it was significantly decreased in the groups of placebo supplementation alone and control.
2. The monocyte was significantly increased in the groups of aerobic exercise with red ginseng supplementation, walking exercise alone, walking exercise with placebo supplementation after the sixteen-week program. The basophil was significantly increased in the group of aerobic exercise with red ginseng supplementation.
3. The neutrophil in the groups of aerobic exercise with red ginseng supplementation, red ginseng supplementation, and control were significantly different from that in the groups of aerobic exercise alone, aerobic exercise with placebo supplementation, and aerobic exercise alone after the sixteen-week program.
