This study is concerned with investigating the syntactic and semantic properties of 'N+ita' structure working a modality function. Previous studies on the forms of this structure have mainly focused on the properties of 'N' only from the perspective of the bound noun 'N', instead of using an integral perspective. However, it is necessary to examine the function of this structure within the sentence when the noun is combined with the preceding complementizer '-nun, -un, -ul' and the copula 'ita'. Modality verbs can be divided into two types; deontic modality and epistemic modality. The deontic modality carries the meaning of [permission] or [obligation] in respect with the inevitability and possibility of an action conducted by a morally responsible agent (or, the subject), whereas the epistemic modality represents the degree of knowledge or confidence of the speaker in the possibility and inevitability for the true value of the statement even if the statement content is different from the fact. In the 'N+ita' structure investigated in this study, the '-nun pep-ita(1), -ul te-ita' and '-ul seam-ita' are regarded as deontic modality, while the '-nun pep-ita(2)', -ul ppun-ita, -ul nolut-ita, -nun pa-ita, -nun moyang-ita' can be regarded as epistemic modality because they represent the psychological state of the speaker on the statement content. In the present study, this 'N+ita' structure was semantically analyzed based on 'the degree of information certainty, attitude in information judgement, source of information, information uniqueness.'
