This paper attempts to provide a force-dynamic approach to subjectivity in the epistemic domain of English modal verbs. It is claimed that modality encoded in English modal auxiliaries is inherently subjective regardless of whether relevant evidence is shared or not. Possible-worlds approaches to subjectivity will be reviewed critically and their shortcomings will be pointed out. Especially Kratzer (1981) and Papafragou (2006) will be reviewed along with Nuyts (2001a). Kratzer"s notion of ordering source will be examined, its flaws will be pointed out, and an alternative solution will be proposed. Especially, it will be pointed out that the ordering sources used for selecting more ideal worlds cannot provide a full account of real world diversities in epistemic inferences. Assuming a force-dynamic approach, this paper will provide a more realistic account of modality by postulating that epistemic modality is basically speaker-initiated and by specifying the epistemic modal process in which the speaker modulates the certainty level of the statements based on some evidence available in the real world.
