This paper is to discuss some lexical items or phrases that are directly or indirectly associated with topic sentences and that influence their choice at the level of discourse. It shows that the lexical items or phrases behave as foci in sentence and that sentences containing them behave as topic sentences in discourse. This study refers to them as focus-related items, which are divided into two types: focus-carrying items and focus-elaborating items. The former highlight propositions containing them as topic sentences, by appearing within the sentences; the latter indicate topic sentences are located in front of them, by appearing behind, and elaborating on, them This paper also considers what information status and syntactic distribution they have within sentences, depending on a data-oriented approach rather than a particular theory.
