Since the research on the tum-taking system by Sacks et al. (1974), much research has been carried out on the nature of tum-taking and unit types in conversation. This study is an attempt to explore the nature of the tum-constructional component, focusing on the sequential and interactional contexts of single-clause turns that function as tum-constructional units (TCUs) in Korean conversation It deals with the questions of in what contexts single-clause turns constitute independent TCUs and what functions or social actions are involved in those contexts. To explore this question, I examine turns that immediately precede and follow single-clause turns on the assumption that the occurrence is determined by the interaction between speakers. The examination of the frequency shows that -nuntey, -ko, and -nikka are the three most frequently used connectives in single¬clause turns and the points at which these connectives end function as transition-relevance places where speaker change frequently takes place. This research shows that not only semantic, pragmatic properties of the connectives but also collaborative actions, overlapping, question- answer adjacency, co-construction are mainly responsible for the occurrence of single-clause turns. Finally, this study of single-clause turns shows the interactive nature of the tum-constructional component, suggesting the need to explore the relationship between interaction and grammar which is constantly shaped by the interaction between speaker and hearer.
