The purpose of this study was to investigate the ecological imagination manifested in the poems written by Jeong Ji-yong and Baek Seok from their views of nature. Both the poets resorted to an ecological consciousness of dreaming of the recovery of organic nature embedded in the traditional thoughts of the Orient as they wrote their poems. The ecological consciousness ultimately manifested itself in their infinite love for the people's language and nature. which put their works under crucial roles in the history of modern poetry.
In the early period, Jeong described his bleak hometown. missing the perfect and rich nature. In the middle period, he saw nature as an equal creature to humans and pursued a world where humans and everything that's not human coexisted in his works. And the late period was dominated by his idea that humans must follow the ways of nature since they were inferior to nature. Meanwhile. Baek expressed his awe for natural things and animals other than humans. described harmony between man and nature or natural objects that consoled humans. and sometimes used the interactions between natural objects to depict a harmonious life between man and nature. By raising the status of nature's existence. he tried to show that a rich and perfect paradise would happen only when every being was in its complete existence.
Both Jeong and Baek grew up in the period when the traditional customs still remained and the influences of modern times started to gain force. The 1930s when they lived can be characterized by a combination of modern and traditional issues. Both the poets were able to perceive nature differently beyond the modern vision even though they were modern individuals themselves. Employing new formats in their poems. they overcame the literary ideality that's isolated from the reality and shared by many other poets during the days. They saw nature as a living creature and tried to save mankind in nature. Such ecological imagination of theirs depicted the reality of modernization by the ruling Japanese colonialists in a critical manner. which proves that the poets claim a significant place in the history of modern poetry.
