People who hold the humanity-over-nature view deny the need of environmental conservation and insist the position of unlimited development of nature. People who oppose this view reject the concept of nature development itself and maintain to preserve nature as is, not even allowing a small change. Some of these, so-called reactionists, even want to go back to a primeval life by rejecting civilization. What is the position of Christianity to nature development The purpose of this article is to give an answer to the question. In other words, it is an attempt to suggest a proper position toward nature development clearly by establishing a sound Christian view on nature. The first task in achieving this purpose is to introduce the existing ecological theology. After the 1960s in which the problems of pollution and contamination were arisen seriously, the western Christianity began to have earnest interests in ecological theology. At present it has formed various kinds of ecological theology as contemporary scholars embrace many different theological positions. In order to arrange many different thoughts, I classify them under the three categories: humanity-over-nature, humanity-in-nature, and humanity-with-nature. Continuously, a couple of scholars representing each position were selected in order to introduce and review the three views in detail. This effort will help us grasp the present address of ecological theology, and at the same time it will become a foundation for establishing an ecological theology based on the Bible and Christianity. The second task is to conduct a power-relationship analysis between humanity and nature. The concept of “power-over” and “power-to” are introduced here in an attempt to analyzed the power-relationship between the superordinate and subordinate. Based on such an analysis, I suggest the concept of “power-with” as the most effective view. Accordingly, I maintain that the humanity-with-nature view, which embraces the concept of “power-with”, points us to the most desirable relationship between humanity and nature. The final task is to have a comparative theological study of the three views Scholars havedealt with various doctrines such as creation, fall, redemption, anthropology, christology, eschatology, and etc. in order to support their ecological theology. I will address the concept of the incarnate Jesus Christ in an attempt to find its meaning in forming an ecological theology. Such discussions will show that the humanity-with-nature view is not only the closest theory to the biblical thought but also the most effective and realistic one. It is my contention that the core of Christian thought supports the “concept of developing nature with love and care,” the humanity-with-nature view. It matches neither with the position of unlimited development of nature, the humanity-over-nature view, nor with that of absolute preservation of nature, the humanity-in-nature view. All creatures on the earth survive by depending on each other. Nature development is inevitable for human survival. Nevertheless, the reckless development results in the destruction of nature. Accordingly it will threaten human survival, and eventually cause the downfall of the earth community. Therefore we, human beings, should find effective ways of development. The “concept of developing nature with love and care” is a nature-friendly effort that tries to manage the earth, the ground of maintaining life for all creatures, effectively according to God`s will.
