Satellite-observed Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data during the period from January 2003 to January 2004 near the Inchon International Airport have been utilized with the help of theoretical simulation in order to analyze optical features of fog and the effect of upper clouds above fog-layer in its nighttime detection. Simultaneous observations of the MODIS and the ground weather station at the airport were used to determine fog and clear-sky conditions. Also, the sensitivity experiments of threshold value (i.e., the difference in brightness temperature between 3.7 ㎛ and 11 ㎛; T<SUB>3.7-11</SUB>) for fog detection were performed using the SBDART model. The T<SUB>3.7-11</SUB> values in the simulation were reasonably good for the condition of fog optical thickness (COT <16) and effective radius (Re < 8 ㎛), consistent with previous observational study in Korea. The brightness temperature at 11 ㎛ (T₁₁) was also useful for the detection, and the visible radiance at 0.66 ㎛ could provide additional information for daytime fog. The T<SUB>3.7-11</SUB> values were more sensitive to the effective radius than the optical thickness, while the T₁₁ values, to the thickness. The discrepancy of the T<SUB>3.7-11</SUB> in nighttime fog between observed and simulated results was found to be mainly due to the existence of upper clouds above the fog-layer. The effect of the clouds to the threshold, which depended on their altitude and phase, was discussed based on Mie scattering calculation.
