Swine influenza virus is an important pathogen in swine respiratory disease and also has potentially play an important role in human respiratory distress. The recombinant protein of the gene encoding hemagglutinin (HA) of the swine influenza virus was expressed in the baculovirus system and characterized. The recombinant protein expressed in the insect cell system showed similar molecular characteristics include cleavage patterns of the HA protein by cellular enzyme. The immunogenicity of the recombinant protein was tested in Balb/c mice and efficacy of the recombinant vaccine was determined followed by nasal exposure of the swine influenza virus which recombinant gene was derived. There was no pathologic changes were observed recombinant protein immunized groups and in mice immunized with BEI inactivated SIV vaccine but severe pneumonic histopathologic changes were noted in mice immunized with insect cells only and control groups. This result indicates that the recombinant HA protein of the SIV is immunogenic and protective in experimental animal model.
