The relative foraging behaviour of Indian hive bee, Apis cerana F. and Italian honeybee A. mellifera L. was evaluated on strawberry, Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne variety Chandler at Regional Research Station, Karnal of CCS Haryana Agricultural University during 2001-02. RPE of nectar (N), pol1en (P) and nectar+pollen (NP) foragers of two species was assessed on the basis of their foraging behaviour parameters such as foraging speed, foraging rate and amount of loose pollen grains sticking to their bodies in relation to their mean population. Both the species collected pollen throughout the day whereas, nectar collectors were active in the evening. Eighty four per cent of A. cerana foragers collected pollen, 4 the nectar and 12 per cent for both the rewards. In case of A. mellifera, their proportion was 68, 28 and 4 per cent, respectively. The nectar gatherers of A. mellifera were both "side as well as top workers" whereas, those of A. cerana were "side workers" only. However, the P and NP gatherers of both species were both side as well as top workers. The pollen foragers of A. mellifera had faster foraging speed and spend 12.1 seconds/flower as compared to N (10.5) and NP gatherers (9.6). Similarly, the pollen foragers of A. cerana were faster (10.0) than N (9.1) and NP foragers (8.3 seconds/flowers). The foraging rate of NP foragers of A. cerana (7.2 flowers/minute) was significantly higher than the nectar (5.4) and pollen foragers' (4.1). Nectar-pollen (4.7 flowers/minute) and nectar (4.6) foragers of A. mellifera on the other hand had higher foraging rate than and pollen gatherers (3.7). A. mellifera had higher loose pollen grain carrying capacity on its body (1,15,700) than A. cerana foragers (81,600). Relative pollination efficiency represented as Pollination Index (PI) was highest for A. cerana pollen gatherers (PI-7.45), followed by A. mellifera pollen gatherers (4.23), A. cerana nectar-pollen gatherers (2.00), A. mellifera nectar gatherers (1.55), A. cerana nectar gatherers (0.46) and A. melltfera nectar-pollen gatherers (0.22). A. cerana, thus was more efficient pollinator of strawberry than A. mellifera.
