This is an introductory article about the special edition on the 'Asian Women in Retrospect: Their Economic Activities and Their Social Status'. In spite of the importance of the Asian women history, the studies on the history of Asian women has just begun. The total time span of the historiography doesn't exceed more than three decades. As Asian scholars we Korean historians began to discuss on the Asian women's past economic activities and social status. And it's not so late.
We selected three articles respectively on the ancient, medieval and modem Chinese women, one on the ancient Japanese women, one on the 15th-19th century Vietnamese women and one on the ) 7th-18th century Ottoman women.
Our conclusions are as follows:
First, one of the most significant findings is that the varieties between the Asian women are so wide that we cannot imagine one single Asian women's configuration.
While the Chinese women improved their social position through their active economic activities, the Vietnamese women couldn't heighten their social status in spite of their vigorous engagement in the commercial activities including overseas foreign trade. And the Ottoman women's commitment to the economic activities during the 17, 18th century didn't either give them higher social position. At present the reasons of the differences are not clear. In order to understand the whys we must accumulate more proofs about the women's past economic activities and social status. In other words we need more about the Asian women's past history. Only more ample examples can supply the reasonable answers.
Second, the past Asian women, from the extreme Eastern Japan to the extreme Western Ottoman Turk, led more active lives than hitherto being assumed. Instead of an passive, subjective Inner existence, the Asian women of all periods and countries studied in the above mentioned six articles did good jobs in their agricultural, commercial, manufactural works. They played very important role in the improvement of the total human lives.
Third and lastly, the extent of the influences that the modernization process had on the liberation of women in the Asian countries varied. As was the case 111 China the Ottoman women enjoyed some son of improvement on their social status during the modernization process. They could receive new kind of education and have totally new jobs such as school teacher, nurse etc. But the Vietnamese women tasted somewhat different kind of the fruits of the modernization. They were excluded from the commercial jobs (their traditionally recognized area) and the sphere was occupied by the imperialist French and the Chinese overseas men. And this time the whys about the differences are not so easy to be explained.
So the very last and foremost conclusion of ours is that every specialist who are interested in Asian history must pay deep attention to the women's perspective on the Asian history. In order to widen the horizon of the historical understanding of the Asian world more of the Asian 'her stories' are needed.
