Malvolio is only an antagonist of the sub-plot in the plot-structure of Twelfth Night, but he has been discussed most widely ever since the first recorded performance of the play on February 2, 1602. Just as Shylock he was a practical threat to the audience who sought ideal values and entertainments in the plays and festivals.
The stability of Queen Elizabeth’s reign based on social, political, and religious compromise among old aristocracy, new aristocracy and middle class had been losing its balance with the rapid growth of middle class since the defeat of Spanish Armada in 1588. With the beginning of 17th century the middle class values had a practical influence in society, even though the theaters were still supported by the court and aristocracy, and many from middle class also enjoyed plays. In the theaters the new practical values of middle class would become an object of satire, but in reality nobody could disregard them. In other words all of them in theaters regardless of their social class fell into the contradiction of values, and, therefore, nobody in this play could make an open protest against Malvolio’s profession of revenge.
His profession of revenge is not only a warning to the Puritan Revolution of the next generation but also a denial to the unpractical idealism represented by Orsino and Olivia. Idealism has been denied on the ground that it was unpractical, but the life of human beings would be impossible without ideal. Therefore, it can be said that his profession is a threat and denial to the life in general. From this point of view the reason why Malvolio has been discussed so widely can be surmised.
