During 1990’s, the Russia as a post socialist country has been experienced radical changes in social structure by market system and the globalization. In the course of these global transformation and market system, a unique experiment was carried out over millions of people ? a change in the social stratification and social value system took place on a large scale. The most remarkable result of the these changes is the rising of the middle class.
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the making of the middle class during the period of 1990’s and to evaluate its social significance on the view of the social change. And it is analyzed by own survey and interviews with the small sized entrepreneurs which have done at Moscow in 2003 and 2004.
Chapter Ⅰ and Ⅱ critically review the existing arguments about the concepts of the middle class and suggests the purpose of this study.
Chapter Ⅲ retrospects the rising and its characteristics of the small sized entrepreneurs in post socialist Russia.
Chapter Ⅳ and Ⅴ analyzes the life style and their consciousness of the middle class in current Russia.
Finally, chapter Ⅵ recapitulates the previous chapters, and suggests the significance and limitation of the middle class in Russia.
The middle class consists of small entrepreneurs, managers and administrators, the upper intelligentsia, and the senior officers in military.
Their lifestyle is similar to that of western middle class. As far as work goes, They could be a manager in a successful enterprise, a doctor, lawyer or other professional near the top of her field. And they give their children private music or tennis lessons and they can afford to take a vacation abroad.
The results of our survey indicate, neither communist, nor liberal, nor nationalist doctrine dominate in the middle class. In a fundamental way, the majority of the middle class recognizes the unconditional supremacy of democracy and market economy rather than any other models. And the larger part of the middle class is oriented to western values, whereas lower social strata predominantly advocate Russia’s ‘own way’.
As a conclusion, the rise of middle class is the product of global market economy and privatization. The current composition of the middle class is largely heterogeneous in terms of social background and social division of labour. And there is no clear evidence of evolving group identity, in terms of the growing self-organization or interaction for the sake of protecting common interests. Everyone relies on his own forces or closest people. With all this in mind, the Russian middle class is not a spectre. Still, it is the silent minority. Furthermore, several generations will be passed before middle class likely western type will be appeared and established, although Russia has been experienced radical changes in social structure by market system and the globalization.
