The objective of this study is to analyze the aspects of the escape motif, as it everlastingly appears in The Iceman Cometh. The escape motif in The Iceman Cometh is the crucial element which is repeated in many different ways. In the play, pipe dreams are expressed as slightly varying individual illusions and as a collective illusion which all characters unconsciously share. Unlike many derelicts in the play, Hickey, Larry, and Parritt have the ability to see things as they really are, resulting in their psychological or physical death. The rest of derelicts reject facing reality and return to their pipe dreams. Their contentment, companionship, mutual understanding, wherein hope springs from hopelessness, renew our awareness of reality. O’Neill’s attitude toward illusion seems positive because the illusion depicted in The Iceman Cometh is obviously worth being protected as a safeguard against the reality.
